Key Applications of Elkonite in Industry:
Resistance Welding:
Elkonite is extensively used in resistance welding processes such as flash and butt welding, projection welding, and electroforging. Its high hardness and strength at high temperatures, combined with good electrical conductivity, make it ideal for electrode and die inserts in these applications.
Electrical Machining:
Elkonite is employed as electrodes in electrical discharge machining (EDM) and electrochemical machining (ECM). Its resistance to spark erosion, good electron emission characteristics, and ability to retain detail make it effective for machining hard materials like tungsten carbide.
Electrical Contacts:
Certain Elkonite compositions, particularly those containing tungsten and silver, are used in electrical contacts, especially in power vacuum switches. These materials offer a good balance of conductivity, arc erosion resistance, and mechanical strength.
Other Applications:
Beyond the core areas mentioned above, Elkonite is also used in applications like seam welder bushing inserts, electro-forming and electro-forging dies, and as facing materials for various components.
